Friendly garden care for south Manchester
Weeds out. Weekends back.
I'm Joe, The Willing Weeder: a one-man, local gardening service that'll happily get down on its knees in your borders so you don't have to. Hand-weeding, tidy-ups, hedges, lawns and regular visits, done properly and tidied up after.

What I do
Whatever the garden's thrown at you, I'm willing.
From a one-off rescue to a little-and-often visit, here's what I can take off your hands. Not sure which you need? Just tell me what's bugging you and I'll suggest something sensible.
-
Weeding & borders
Hand-weeded, root and all. I hoe, fork and pull the lot (dandelions, bindweed, that mystery thing by the shed) and leave your borders crisp, edged and breathing again.
My speciality -
Seasonal clear-outs
Spring wake-ups and autumn put-to-beds. Leaves raked, perennials cut back, beds cleared and everything bagged up neatly, ready for your garden-waste bin or compost heap.
Spring & autumn -
Hedge & shrub trimming
Neat lines without the butchery. I shape hedges and shrubs at the right time of year, and always check for nesting birds before a single snip.
Neat, not brutal -
Lawn tidy & edging
Mowing, razor-sharp edges, a bit of feed and some honest advice about the moss. (It's Manchester. I'll manage it, not declare war on it.)
Crisp edges -
Regular maintenance visits
Fortnightly, monthly or whatever suits. Same friendly face, a little and often, so the garden never gets away from you again.
Most popular -
Mulching & bed refresh
Peat-free compost and bark mulch to feed the soil, hold in moisture and keep weeds down for months. I order it to your door and spread it for you. The not-so-secret secret to a low-effort garden.
Fewer weeds later
How it works
Four easy steps. No faff.
I keep things simple, because you've got enough on without your gardener being hard work too.
-
Say hello
Fill in the form, drop me a message or give me a ring. Tell me roughly what's going on out there. Photos help loads.
-
Free look-round
I pop over for a wander, a natter and a proper look. No hard sell, no sharp intake of breath, no "ooh, that'll cost you".
-
A clear, fixed quote
You get a straightforward price in writing. No surprises, no extras sneaking onto the bill at the end.
-
I get stuck in
I turn up when I say, do the job properly and leave it tidier than I found it. Brew optional (but very much appreciated).
Before & after
Same border. Different afternoon.
Drag the handle to see a typical half-day border rescue: weeds out by the root, edges cut, beds mulched, everything bagged up and tidied.
- Weeds lifted by hand, roots and all
- Lawn edges re-cut with a half-moon
- Peat-free mulch to keep it that way
- Green waste bagged up, ready for you to dispose of
Illustration for now. Real before-and-after photos from local jobs coming soon [TBC: client photos]

Meet the gardener
Hiya. I'm your gardener
Just me. Joe, your gardener.
I started The Willing Weeder because I genuinely love the bit of gardening most people dread. Give me an overgrown border, a kneeling pad and a flask of tea and I'll happily lose a whole afternoon.
I'm local, I'm reliable, and I'll treat your garden like it's my own (only tidier). No big van fleet, no call centre, no randomly assigned crew: just me, turning up when I say I will and doing the job properly.
I've gardened most of my life, right back to the gardening club at primary school. I'm a lover of nature, and being outdoors is where I'm happiest.
I started gardening professionally in 2018, when I joined the Friends of Fletcher Moss Botanical Gardens volunteer group. Working as part of the team taught me a huge amount about sustainable gardening and the wide variety of plants that grow in that beautiful corner of Manchester. I'm still a valued member of the gardening team there, eight years on.
I've also studied with the RHS and hold the Level 2 Certificate in Plant Growth and Development. It gave me a greater appreciation for different gardening styles, and for the environmental impact of how I garden.
See you in the borders,
Joe

The eco promise
Kind to your garden. Kinder to everything else.
Good gardening shouldn't cost the earth, so I keep it simple and old-school: elbow grease first, chemicals almost never.
-
Hands first, chemicals last
I hoe, fork and hand-pull. No glyphosate by default, and if something genuinely needs treating, I'll talk it through with you first.
-
Peat-free, always
Every bag of compost and mulch I order is peat-free. Peat belongs in the ground, in bogs like Chat Moss just up the road, not in your flowerbed.
-
Green waste, sorted
Clippings and weeds are bagged up for your garden-waste bin or council collection, or go straight onto your own compost heap if you've got one going. Happy to talk through installing or building a compost bin if you haven't.
-
Wildlife welcome
I check hedges for nests before trimming, leave a wild corner if you'll let me, and don't tidy away every last seedhead the birds and bees rely on. Hedgehogs, you're safe here.
-
Quiet, battery-powered kit
Battery tools wherever I can, [CONFIRM WITH CLIENT] so there are fewer fumes and your neighbours stay your friends.
-
Right plant, right place
Ask me and I'll suggest tough, pollinator-friendly plants that like Manchester's (ahem) generous rainfall, so your garden works with the weather, not against it.
The Manchester gardening year
What I'm up to, season by season.
Gardens don't stop, and neither do I. Here's roughly what happens on a regular visit through the year (weather permitting, which in Manchester is a big ask).
-
Spring
March to May
- Clear winter debris and dead growth
- First big weeding blitz
- Re-cut lawn edges, first mows
- Mulch beds before the weeds get ideas
Forecast: optimistic.
-
Summer
June to August
- Little-and-often weeding
- Deadheading to keep flowers coming
- Lawn care and watering advice
- Hedge trims, after nesting checks
Forecast: still raining, but warmer.
-
Autumn
September to November
- Leaves, leaves and more leaves
- Cut back tired perennials
- Plant spring bulbs
- Put the borders to bed with mulch
Forecast: dramatic.
-
Winter
December to February
- Pruning while plants are dormant
- Structural tidy-ups and repairs
- Clear paths and drains of muck
- Plan next year's planting with you
Forecast: you know.
Kind words
Don't just take my word for it.

Turned up exactly when they said, worked like a Trojan and left the borders looking like something out of a magazine. Even swept the path.
Margaret · Chorlton (sample) -
I'd honestly given up on the back garden. Three hours later I could see the patio again. Brilliant work, and properly nice with it.
Dev · Sale (sample) -
Our monthly visit is the best money we spend. The garden's never looked this good and I've not picked up a hoe since March.
Siobhan · Levenshulme (sample)
Go on, pull a weed.
Satisfying, isn't it? Now imagine a whole border. (Or let me do it.)
7 weeds to go.

Good questions
The bits people usually ask.
Anything else? Just drop me a message. There's no such thing as a daft question about a garden.
Do you use weedkiller?
Not by default. I hand-weed, hoe and mulch, which works brilliantly and is better for your soil, pets and local wildlife. If you've got something really stubborn (Japanese knotweed, say) I'll talk you through the options first and never use anything without your say-so.
Do I need to be in when you visit?
Nope. As long as I can get into the garden (side gate, code, a key under the gnome, whatever works) I can crack on while you're at work. I'll send a quick message when we're done.
What happens to the green waste?
I don't drive, so I can't take it away myself, but I'll bag it all up neatly and leave it ready for your garden-waste bin or council collection. If you've got a compost heap, I'm happy to use that instead.
Can you supply compost or mulch?
Yes. I don't drive, so I order peat-free compost or mulch from B&Q straight to your address and add the cost to your bill. I'll spread it on my next visit. I'm also happy to talk about installing or building a compost bin for you.
How often should I book regular visits?
For most gardens, fortnightly from spring to autumn and monthly over winter keeps everything under control. Smaller or low-maintenance gardens can get by on monthly all year. I'll suggest what makes sense on our first visit, and you can change it any time.
Do you work in the rain?
It's Manchester, so yes, within reason. A bit of drizzle never stopped anyone. If it's properly chucking it down or the ground is waterlogged (which can damage lawns and soil) I'll rearrange and let you know in good time.
Is there a minimum job size?
Visits are a minimum of 2 hours, which means I can do a proper job rather than a rushed one. Small garden? I'll happily combine jobs to make it worthwhile.
Are you insured?
Yes, I carry public liability insurance, [CONFIRM WITH CLIENT: insurer and cover amount] and I'm happy to show you the certificate.
How do I pay?
Bank transfer is easiest (my details are on my card), and I'm happy to agree how that works with you. If bank transfer doesn't suit, cash is absolutely fine too. No deposits for standard jobs.
